Sailor, teacher. Dorris was the son of Jonathan Truman Dorris, a professor of history and government at Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College. He received his BA from that college, and an MA in political science from the University of Kentucky, then taught school in Alabama before joining the U.S. Navy in 1941.
